File locked for editing by me I have Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011, Version 14.1.2 on my computer. The only reason I ever use Excel is to manage our family budget.
We are using Excel 2010 and sometimes users are working from a network share. When a user on the network opens the file in Excel, the file is locked for editing - this is the expected behavior. When another user tries to open the file, Excel gives the message filename is locked for editing by 'John Doe' The problem is, the user is always this one particular user's name, no matter who actually has the file open.
Where does Excel get this info, and how do I fix it? Update: I should have mentioned that in Excel, under Options (General), the correct user names have been set up. That is not where this user name is coming from. Excel creates a hidden file on the share called $filename where filename is the original file. That hidden file conatins the name of the user who has the file locked.
The name comes from the Office options, as others have stated. For some reason that file was not deleted properly when the file was closed. Oddly, everything still works - the next user to open the file can still edit and save, but it looks like it's checked out to someone else. And even after editing, saving and closing Excel, that hidden file is still not deleted.
After manually deleting the file, everything works properly again.
Hi, After the Mavericks update I have been having issues with files stored on my machine. I am now getting messages saying the file is locked for editing, and can only open 'read-only'.
(These files are on a partition I made on the 500GB Macintosh HD which have been working fine for sometime before Mavericks) I have tried copying the sheet (Excel) onto a new workbook and deleting the old file, but still no good. However, I am able to rename the file and then it opens fine!

Can anyone help? Is this to do with a temporary file being left somewhere?? I have used Onyx to check/repair, but no good. Anyone advise? Is the partition mounted on the desktop? If it is not, go to Finder / Preferences / General and check the appropriate box.
Now right click (or control click) the partition, and select Get Info from the drop down. A new pane will open. Select the drive icon and open Sharing and Permissions: Click the padlock and authenticate with your pasword. Click your name, then in Privilege make sure you have Read & Write.
Now click the gear wheel at the bottom, and select Apply to enclosed items. The process will take some time.
When it's done, close the Info pane, and you should be good to go. I have tried this already. What does the tick box mean to 'Ignore ownership on this volume' I have been on the phone to Microsoft who completely removed all traces of Office, then reinstalled lasted version. Then set up a 'Test User' Mac login account and copied one of the files in question on to the desktop. File opening works fine. Navigate back to the original location on the partition and still unable to open!
